This year, our conference, held on December 15th and 16th, marks the 8th edition of SMUNSP. For such an incredible occasion, the Secretariat has chosen “The greatest danger to our future is apathy,” a quote by Jane Goodall, as the event’s theme. This quote speaks directly to the legacy we wish to leave, not only in the world, by seeking improvement and lasting solutions to global issues, but also here at SMUNSP.
As a graduating student who has spent all four years of high school participating in MUN and being part of the Organizing Team, this conference holds deep meaning for me. I have dreamed of leading SMUNSP ever since my first official debate in Curitiba, which is funny, considering that I had barely spoken or participated in previous internal conferences. However, being supported by my colleagues and truly engaging in the flow of debate made me fall in love with this simulation and recognize all the growth it has brought me.
Therefore, it doesn’t matter if this is your first SMUNSP conference or your last, always show up and give your best. This is a unique opportunity to develop not only debate-related skills, but also personal growth, new friendships, and open-minded experiences. Whether you are debating issues such as sustainability, human rights, or global conflict, remember that the ideas you propose can make a difference both now and for future generations.
I look forward to seeing all of you in December at the Swiss-Brazilian School of São Paulo, for a conference where we can all contribute to something meaningful and leave behind a lasting legacy we can be proud of.
